Sustainability, Durability, Longevity

Our sustainability mission is focused on creating durable products with longevity, using quality natural materials that are sustainably sourced.

We believe in transparency and accountability throughout our supply chain and operations, and we aspire to be known as a mindful brand, recognised for doing things in a conscious and considerate way.

Our Sustainable Design Philosophy

At Craster, we value quality, longevity and craftsmanship.  Every design from Craster is intended for rigorous, resilient use. We believe that designing products to last the rigors of the hospitality industry can have a big impact on both the environment and our clients’ operations.

We are actively helping customers to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve relevant accreditations through innovative designs that deliver exceptional guest experiences and offer intelligent solutions to the most wasteful elements of hospitality service.

“As a manufacturer, longevity is a powerful way to reduce our impact on the environment. We achieve this in a number of ways. We are uncompromising in the quality of materials we employ. We will always strive to eliminate the extraneous. And we care about build quality and detail. Many of our products are still working hard in relentless hospitality environments 15 years after being introduced into service.”  Alex Craster, Founder & CEO

Our Product Offering

Our products boast a long lifespan, reducing the frequency of repurchase and minimizing resource consumption.  We are committed to exploring more ways to incorporate sustainability into our product offerings.

Our product offering is engineered with robust, quality materials from sustainable sources.  Products have been carefully crafted to support customers in their efforts to phase out single use items.

For example:

  • Our covered and replenishable modular systems offer alternatives to industrial plastics.
  • Our yoghurt & juice dispensers have been created to support portion control and reduce plastic packaging, helping to reduce food waste and eradicate the use of harmful individual plastic containers.
  • Implementation of our heating units has led to reduced electricity usage for buffets, promoting energy efficiency.
  • Our cold cell cooling units do not require electricity to power, maintaining temperature for a 4-hour service, providing a sustainable way to deliver chilled food to guests.
  • Our conference and events table ranges are designed to sustain rigorous use without coverage.  The residential aesthetic of our environmentally-conscious table tops enables clients to save thousands of litres of water annually on linen cleaning.

“Since we launched our Line Conference Tables, I’ve heard from so many clients how grateful they are to be able to move to a table solution that does not use linen.  By removing the laundering of linen from their operation they remove a significant management issue as well as a large cost. The client was very excited to have a more sustainable table option as their corporate teams have been focusing on sustainable solutions for their global brand.” Amy Myers, Craster COO

Our Manufacturing, Packaging and Warehousing

Our main joinery uses all their wood off-cuts for heating the factories in winter.

We continue to improve the sustainability of our packaging materials to minimise environmental impact, including one of our main vendors that has transitioned to plastic-free packaging.

Our warehouse partner, DACHSER, is committed to environmental and climate protection through four key action areas:

  1. Process Efficiency: Optimising goods and information flows to reduce unnecessary transports and energy consumption, thereby minimising greenhouse gas emissions. This includes using AI, IoT, fully loaded trucks, and multimodal transport.
  1. Energy Efficiency: Implementing energy-saving solutions and low-emission technologies in logistics facilities, which are powered by 100% green electricity. Measures include LED lighting, battery-powered forklifts, and emission-free deliveries in certain city areas.
  1. Research & Innovation: Focusing on emission-free logistics through research and partnerships, particularly in developing battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The DACHSER Enterprise Lab works on digital and sustainable process innovations.
  1. Corporate Citizen+: Supporting social and climate action initiatives, especially in low- and middle-income countries. DACHSER partners with organizations like terre des hommes and myclimate to improve education, living conditions, and implement community projects focused on sustainability.

As of January 2025, DACHSER has achieved significant milestones, including 16 emission-free delivery areas, 29 photovoltaic systems, 715 charging stations, over 100 zero-emission vehicles, and 100% green electricity in its branches.

Staff Travel

As a global business, we are careful to consider the implications of staff travel.

We expect staff to try to use the most “carbon efficient” and cost-effective ways of travelling given the circumstances of the journey. This means, if possible:

  • using trains instead of planes where practicable
  • using trains instead of cars for long journeys
  • using bicycles instead of cars for shorter journeys
  • using public transport instead of taxis
  • multiple occupation of vehicles
  • using tele-conferencing and video conferencing

We know that often time constraints make some forms of travel more difficult, but we encourage carbon friendly travel.

Our Ongoing Commitment to a Sustainable Future

We recognise that our ambition to become a more sustainable company requires a long-term commitment.

We have made significant progress towards being a sustainable manufacturer, but we know there’s more to do.

Our current corporate sustainability initiatives include:

  • Calculating our current transport emissions and implementing strategies to minimise our carbon footprint by using lower-emission transport solutions.
  • Identifying and addressing emissions associated with our suppliers, prioritising sustainability in our relationships.
  • Exploring more ways to incorporate sustainability into our product offerings with solutions that reduce food waste and plastic packaging.
  • Enhancing the sustainability of our product design by utilising waste materials where possible.
  • Understanding our customers’ sustainability needs and striving to meet them effectively.

Measuring Success

We will measure the success of these initiatives by:

  • Using a third-party platform for assessment and accreditation to validate and further solidify our commitment to sustainability.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the percentage of our product portfolio that is designed to either reduce food waste and plastic packaging and / or uses waste materials in the manufacturing process.
  • Monitoring and reporting on our transport emissions as we implement lower emission solutions.
  • Using customer research to understand whether our offering matches our customers’ sustainability commitments.

EcoVadis Rating

Continuous and effective management of sustainability practices is critical to our business and society. At Craster, we use EcoVadis, a global leader in business sustainability assessments, to rate our performance, identify risks and to understand where we can improve and make a bigger impact across the world.

Ecovadis assessments are based on an internationally recognised methodology that evaluates companies through Policies, Actions, and Results. For Craster, they based their assessments on four key sustainability themes: Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. Within these themes, EcoVadis assesses a set of criteria that are tailored to the company’s industry, size, and geographic footprint. Each theme is weighted according to its relevance to the assessed company, and the final score is expressed as a result out of 100, reflecting the overall maturity of sustainability management systems rather than isolated initiatives.

In our latest rating, which was completed on 31/10/2025, Craster earned a Bronze Medal, achieving a score of 63/100 , which places Craster in the top 35% globally.

At Craster, we focus on quality, longevity and craftsmanship in every design. In hospitality environments, durable products can help reduce the need for frequent replacement, which may in turn support more resource-efficient operations for our clients.

One of our recent initiatives is the transition from plastic to paper packaging for all Tilt and Flow frame products. Since August 2024, this shift has removed an estimated 0.75 tonnes of plastic packaging, based on internal calculations with our packaging partner.

Earning a Bronze EcoVadis Medal is an important milestone, but it is not an endpoint. We view this assessment as part of an ongoing process: continuously reviewing our practices, refining our packaging and material use, and strengthening the systems that support responsible business conduct across our organisation and supply chain.

In Conclusion

By focusing on these key areas and implementing strategic actions in the short, medium, and long term, we aim to strengthen our sustainability initiatives, reduce our environmental footprint, and continue providing high-quality products that align with our values and meet the evolving needs of our customers.
